Student experience in ECE
As you enter the college the first thing you would notice, is the college has one of the biggest and spacious campus. “Lush green and scenic”- these words describe NSIT.
First day in college is awesome. NO RAGGING, sweet people and the best part, no studies. You eventually get acquainted with one or two people as the day ends. The college campus is good. It is also centralized, a plus point.
The first month you do not get in touch with many seniors but you do get to meet some of the seniors during orientation of the different clubs. Seniors are very helpful in making us adjust to completely new surroundings. Absolutely no ragging. How to manage to get 75% in each sem is one advice every senior would love to give you.
On the very first day you are introduced to the various societies of NSIT. There are several societies and clubs in NSIT, though blamed for being dormant and their indolent members, yet are silently active. You will infallibly find a society that you can relate to. People also join some clubs on their solemn interests, like “Rotaract” if you believe in bringing a change or “Debsoc” if you are passionate about debating. It is hence you to umpire which club you want to be associated with. It’s not easy to manage many extracurricular interests, time management is a bit of an issue, with classes extending into the evening. But a few weeks into college, when you get used to it, you can definitely cope up. Once you grapple up with these believe me, you are going to enjoy your college life, despite many arduous and strenuous subjects waiting for you from 2nd year onwards in ECE.
College provides hostels for girls and boys, various canteens and cafes and a huge sports complex. The overall ambience of college is good .The environment here is definitely not overtly academic. There is a healthy balance to it. The campus is quite chiller with a lot of places to sit and catch up with your friends, and a lot of different places to eat and relax. The stairs of the admin block, the newly built-Zayka snacks zone, Mic Mac , Just Cafeteria, terrace of Connecting Block , etc are always studded with the dudes and dudettes of the college. Central fountain and lawns (in front of the zayka snacks zone) are the favorites in the winters.
The college also supports a big central library where you can find multitudes of books on analog circuits, quantum computing, Digital Signal Processing, microwave engineering ,etc to pursue your interest in the branch apart from the regular curriculum books.
The ECE branch, especially, provides the perfect ground and flexibility for students who wish to go into other streams. NSIT is known for having very good and advanced laboratory facilities which are totally accessible to all students and the ECE Department has some of the best lab facilities. The department places strong emphasis on fundamentals, so that the student is introduced to complex subjects in an interesting and easy manner. Students are helped in the various advancements and technological innovations in electronics ,which are felt in area as diverse as commercial communications, medicine and defense.
Texas Instruments, LG Electronics, Nokia, AMD, CISCO, Nvdia, HP and IBM, BEL, Ericson are among the big names NSIT is blessed with every year. Apart from these many students plan to go forward with MBA, MS, etc and the name NSIT just comes in handy.
To revitalize and deter you lil’ from academics we have a 3 fests round the year. Everyone would agree to the fact that fest are what brings the college together. The college fests have been a mixed bag.
Resonance, the intra-college fest helped in bringing the fraternity in the different branches. INNOVISION helps is the technical & managerial extravaganza which taught how to work collectively in a group and put up a fest .MOKSHA was clearly the best fest as it is considered to be one of the most memorable times of a year in NSIT. Thrilling dance, music and various other events, the celeb-night are the hotshots.
Hostel life is the best part of college life, where the real fun is. The first year hostel itself organizes various extra-curricular and sports extravaganza throughout the year. From late night Maggie to the crowded badminton court and table tennis room, from crowded double rooms where people watch a movie to times when the whole hostel watches a game of soccer or cricket together on the TV, the hostel life gets better n better.
My choice of stream was voluntary because of the excellent faculty serving the ECE department currently. Although you will hardly find branch-related topics being taught, but as the introduction of Electrical Sc. and Principles of Elec.Engg. in the 2nd sem you do get a taste of it. The diversity of the curriculum becomes evident after the first year. The course consists of sufficient papers on all major fields of engineering - Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Control engineering. The final two years however, are devoted, almost entirely, to advanced topics in Electronics and Communication Engg., such as Digital Signal Processing, Microwave engineering and Bipolar and MOS Analog IC design. The faculty has diverse interests and this encourages the students to follow any areas of their choice.
The ECE Division has a very cohesive, like-minded team whose members have strong commitment towards teaching and research. To bring to the notice, Dr Raj Senani (head,ECE & Director)was recently honored as the Second KIA Laureate of the 25th Khwarizmi International Award for his outstanding research. You can even join such professors in their research or put up your own project under their guidance. The Faculty members of the division of the ECE have been quite active in research and have published over 200 research papers in the journals of the IEEE (USA), IEE (UK) and other reputed international journals since 1998. Professors like Dr. S. P. Singh, Dr. Maneesha Gupta, and Dr. Harish Parthasarthy have been working on Optical Communication, VLSI, Wave Propagation, Analog design, etc and you can join them in their venture.
Although being associated with the scoffing blasphemy of “Ghisu” , you will find that it is the ECE guys who espouse and puts fests and other co-curricular activities. You will find a considerable no. of ECE guys into dance, arts, debating and all. The ECE crowd in the college is extremely vivacious and ebullient.
As days pass and when you have your 1st sem results in hand, you realize the crowd is not too geeky but extremely smart. Initially you don’t feel the pressure to be at the top in academics after entering such a reputed institute , but after the first semester you realize that with a little bit of effort of attending classes and studying properly at the right times, can have great results, and hence a slight pressure of working harder henceforth.
NSIT is a great, great college with lots of active societies and academic schedule is so relaxed that one does get a lot of time to explore one’s interests and avocations. And believe me ECE as a branch will never stop you from doing so.
Life at NSIT is really Good.
